Tsavo Safari. Kenya's Biggest Park, Without the Crowds

Tsavo is Kenya's largest protected area, split into East and West. famous for its red-dust elephants and wide, rugged landscapes. It's also one of the least crowded major parks, so your game drives feel like your own, not shared with a dozen other vehicles.

What to expect in Tsavo

If you've searched Tsavo East safari options, there's a good chance you already know Kenya's more famous parks and are looking for something with fewer other vehicles at every sighting. Tsavo delivers that. it's Kenya's largest national park by far, split into Tsavo East and Tsavo West, each with a distinct character, and neither anywhere near as busy as the Mara during peak season.

We plan Tsavo safaris with a 4x4 vehicle, an experienced driver-guide, and an itinerary built around whether you want East, West, or both. not a one-size-fits-all route.

Two Parks, One Name

🌅 Tsavo East

🌲 Tsavo West

More varied and dramatic scenery. volcanic hills, natural springs, and Mzima Springs' underwater viewing of hippos and crocodiles. A bit more rugged, with denser vegetation in places.

FAQs

Should I visit Tsavo East or Tsavo West, or both?

Tsavo East is generally flatter and more open, known for its red-elephant herds and easier game-drive terrain, while Tsavo West is more varied with volcanic hills, springs, and denser vegetation. If you only have 2-3 days, we'd typically recommend focusing on one side rather than splitting time between both; with 4 or more days, covering both is realistic.

How far is Tsavo from Nairobi, and how do we get there?

By road, Tsavo is roughly 4-5 hours from Nairobi depending on which entrance and section of the park you're heading to, which we build into your itinerary as a travel day. It's also a common stop along the Nairobi–Mombasa route if you're continuing to the coast.

How many days do I need for a Tsavo safari?

Two days is workable for a focused visit to one side of the park, but three days gives more breathing room for multiple game drives. If you want to see both Tsavo East and West properly, four or more days avoids feeling rushed between them.

How much does a Tsavo safari cost?

Cost depends on which side(s) of the park you visit, trip length, and accommodation level. A shorter trip focused on one side of Tsavo is generally more affordable than a longer itinerary covering both East and West with premium camps. Send us your dates and preferences and we'll quote a specific price.

What animals will I see in Tsavo?

Tsavo is particularly known for its large elephant herds (visibly reddish from the park's dust), along with lion, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and a wide range of antelope species. Tsavo West's Mzima Springs also offers a chance to see hippos and crocodiles from an underwater viewing point. Wildlife density is generally lower per square kilometer than the Mara, given Tsavo's much larger size, but sightings tend to feel less crowded with other vehicles.

Is Tsavo less crowded than the Maasai Mara?

Tsavo receives noticeably fewer visitors than the Mara, particularly outside of the Nairobi–Mombasa transit routes, which often means more space around wildlife sightings and fewer other vehicles at any given spot.

Can I combine Tsavo with a trip to the coast (Mombasa or Diani)?

Tsavo sits along the route between Nairobi and the coast, so combining a Tsavo safari with a few days at the beach afterward is a common and practical itinerary.

Can I combine Tsavo with another safari park, like Amboseli or the Mara?

For longer trips (typically 5+ days) combining Tsavo with Amboseli is more geographically practical than combining it with the Mara, given the distances involved. tell us your total available time and we'll suggest a realistic combination.

What's the best time of year to visit Tsavo?

Tsavo can be visited year-round, though the dry seasons (roughly June–October and January–February) tend to concentrate wildlife more visibly around remaining water sources, similar to Kenya's other major parks.

How far in advance should I book a Tsavo safari?

Tsavo is generally less booked-out than the Mara, so we can often accommodate shorter notice. but during peak season (June-October), a few weeks' notice is still safer if you want a specific lodge or camp.
